Weird Noises from Your Copier? Here’s What Causes Them
Office copiers naturally make some noise when they’re running. However, they shouldn’t be excessively noisy. If your copy machine is producing more than its normal humming sounds during operation, there could be something wrong. Keep reading to learn what the most common causes are of weird copier noises and how to fix them.
Grinding or Clicking
If your printer makes a grinding or printing noise when it’s operating, there are 3 likely causes: misaligned or worn-out gears, a foreign object lodged inside the printer, or fault rollers. Disconnect your printer and open up the access panels to inspect the gears for any sign of damage or loose parts. You can also inspect the interior for any signs of foreign objects or debris, and carefully remove them at this time. If you don’t see either of these issues, check out the print rollers, which are located inside the printer, close to the paper tray. If they are misaligned or worn down, they may need to be repositioned or replaced.
High-Pitched Squealing
A high-pitched squealing sound from your printer might seem like a small pig hasn’t gotten stuck inside your machine, but it’s far more likely that the sound is caused by dry or worn-out rollers, or a slipping belt inside the machine. Check the print rollers and, if they look dry, apply a small amount of manufacturer-approved lubricant to them. Check the printer’s belts as well for signs of wear and tear, and replace them if necessary. If both of these parts look okay, ensure that the paper is loading correctly and not causing excess friction as it’s passing through the machine, as this can also cause the printer to squeal.
Loud Banging or Thumping
These noises are most often heard when you have a paper jam. Paper jams can cause internal parts to hit each other and make banging noises. Typically, you’ll know you have a paper jam pretty quickly, as the printer will give you an error message. Clear the paper jam, and be careful to avoid tearing the paper inside the machine. If you don’t have a paper jam, these noises could also be caused by a misaligned toner cartridge or a broken internal component. Try removing and reinserting the toner cartridge to ensure it’s seated correctly. If the banging noises persist, contact a professional technician to inspect your copier machine in Fairbanks, AK, for broken or loose parts.
