Solar power systems have become much more affordable over the years as production costs have come down. The equipment for a system, however, still makes up the bulk of the cost. The cost of a solar panel can range significantly based on the type of panel and its efficiency rating. On average, a solar panel will cost between $2.50 and $3.50 per watt of power production. A typical residential system will produce around 6 kilowatts, which translates to between $15,000 and $21,000 for the solar panels, before any incentives or rebates.
Inverters
The inverter is another essential piece of equipment for any solar power system. They’re responsible for converting the DC power your panels make into the AC power that your home actually uses to power lights and most electronics and appliances. There are 3 main types of inverters on the market: string inverters, microinverters, and power optimizers, and their costs vary accordingly:
- String Inverters: $1,000 to $2,000
- Microinverters: $1,000 to $3,000
- Power Optimizers: $1,500 to $2,000
Keep in mind that different inverter types have their pros and cons, so it’s important to research your options thoroughly and not just base your decision on price tag alone.
Batteries
While not all systems require batteries, they can provide significant benefits, even if you’re tied to the city utility grid. Batteries store the excess power generated during the day so that you can use them during non-sunny periods. The cost of solar batteries continues to decline, but they still represent a significant investment. On average, solar batteries for a complete residential system will cost between $10,000 and $20,000, depending on the exact amount of energy storage you require.
Mounting Systems
Finally, you’ll need a proper mounting system to secure your solar panels to your roof. The cost of these systems depends on the type of roof and the complexity of the installation. On average, a mounting system can cost anywhere between $500 and $3,000 for a residential setup.
Of course, there are ways to cut costs. Be sure to shop around and compare prices from different suppliers. You can often find wholesale solar panels at a reduced price, cutting down on the priciest part of most residential systems.
