Poetry Analysis Essay on “The Shark”: In Pratt’s “The Shark”, the use of the metaphor is not only predominant, but very obvious as well. Throughout the text he uses this device along with other elements to create diverse binary situations, which became one after further analysis.
This poem is unique in that it openly states the metaphorical meaning in such a way that the reader might interpret it either way if read literally. The title of this work is a clue to the underlying content as well as a persuasion of the reader's thinking.
Pratt employed a variety of techniques free essay writer to convey this dual identity, directing the reader's attention to the second meaning. In the first stanza, “His fin, /Like a piece of sheet-iron,” emerges. This is Pratt's only simile, and it begins to define the "shark" as inactive, even machine-like. He described the creature's movements as smooth and precise, like a slice from the fin's "knife-edge." Pratt has already given the reader a choice or a potential for this being's identity, and the idea that the "shark" is a boat becomes clearer.
The mood shifts to a more mechanical tone in the second stanza. The words abruptly end, each subsequent line adding to the visual description of this beast. The similarities become more explicit as the story progresses, allowing the reader to observe a definite pattern emerge. A vivid example of the similarity is “And eyes of steely grey, / Hard and narrow slit.” This may be a real animal or, most likely, a watercraft. The wording in this stanza begins softly, but quickly becomes choppy and harsh, suiting the movement of either object.
The title of this poem has a strong influence on the reader. Before even reading the poem, the reader has a mental image of a living shark, or whatever image they have of sharks. By labeling this piece as he did, Pratt was able to not only accurately describe the boat, but also to metaphorically depict this machine as a shark at the same time. If the poem were titled "The Machine," the persuasion to see the machine would detract from the "shark" part of the poem, and the reader would not receive the same insight.
Pratt was able to capture the reader's attention with the headline and subsequent material. He conveyed to the reader that he was describing this "shark" essay helper free but meant a boat with his facial expressions. The descriptions of callous metallic parts alluded to the ship's ruthlessness as it set sail, similar to those of a shark. The connections that Pratt created between the two items are obvious throughout the text; yet, comprehending the metaphorical implications is required to infer that the shark is a boat.
