Mods That Totally Change Games
We could argue all day about whether it’s better to play video games on a PC or a console, and many people do. We’re not going to weigh in with an opinion on that question, but we do have a point to make. It’s extremely difficult to obtain and implement a mod for a game on a console. It’s much easier to do so with PC games. So long as there’s a programmer gifted enough and a community there to download and appreciate it, a mod can completely change the way a game is played. It can sometimes even bring new life to an old game in the process.
Developers don’t always love mods. While some companies have been known to embrace and even collaborate with modders, others aren’t quite as thrilled with people tampering with their original vision. Rockstar Games have caused controversy within the past few weeks by cracking down hard on a Red Dead Online mod menu, banning several high-profile players in the process. It’s never nice to play a mod while simultaneously fearing that your use of the mod in question could get you banned from playing your favourite game at a moment’s notice. That’s why we’ve written this article.
The mods we're about to list are fantastic, but more importantly than that, they're stable. The people who make these games know they exist, and they're happy for people to use them. If you're looking for a new way to play a game you already love, here are some for you to check out.
TSLRCM - Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords
Star Wars fans can be a picky bunch, but they were probably right to say that Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords was a disappointment. Expectations were high after the success of the first game, and the majority of reviewers felt the sequel was a letdown. Not everybody agreed - IGN was willing to overlook the numerous bugs because they were happy with the general gameplay, but content was cut, and the overall feeling was that the game was a little lacking because of it.
If you still have a copy of this old game lying around somewhere, you no longer have to play it without the cut content. It's all been restored thanks to the TSLRCM mod, which stands for the rather long-winded "The Sith Lords Restored Content Mod." Aside from giving players far more content to play through, it also takes care of some of the bugs that were present at launch and gives the entire game engine a polish. Once you've tried it, you'll never go back.
Farewell of the White Wolf: The Witcher2
There's a lot of story to play through in The Witcher 2. it's an incredible game, though, and even after hours of immensely satisfying story completion, most players still want more. Fortunately, someone's stepped up to provide it for you. The "Farewell of the White Wolf" mod is not only a good expansion of The Witcher 2 but provides further context and meaning to the narrative that began with the original game.
The mod follows the story of Geralt and Yennefer's marriage beyond the end of The Witcher 2 and into the future, offering some poignant moments and interesting gameplay challenges. You have to make do with the fact there's no voice acting, but if you're able to look past that, you should find the story every bit as compelling as the one written by the original developers.
Roleplay Servers - GTA V
The persistence of Grand Theft Auto V is incredible. It will be nine years old by the time its sequel is finally released, but it's found ways to stay relevant and popular for almost a decade. That's despite the problems that Rockstar caused for themselves when they added the Diamond Hotel Casino & Resort a couple of years ago. Even though no real money changed hands, it got into trouble in territories where online slots are prohibited. Governments and gaming authorities in those countries deemed the games on offer in the GTA casino were equivalent to online slots and casino websites and banned them outright. Despite the fact that there was no evidence that Rose Slots for New Zealand Players had started flocking to the game in droves, but the back stuck. Rockstar lost out on money but eventually navigated their way around it.
There's no such scandal about the "Roleplay Servers" mod, which is a totally new way of playing the game. Find your way to the servers, and you'll soon be playing a highly modded version of the game where you inhabit a character within the game world. Consequences matter here. If you go to jail, you're staying in jail. If you die, you stay dead. It's like Second Life, but incredibly violent. It's surprising that Rockstar tolerates this given their attitude to Read Dead Redemption mods, but they do.
New California - Fallout New Vegas
Very few games have been modded as often as Fallout New Vegas. You can find mods based on Doctor Who, Star Trek, Star Wars, Dexter, and just about every other popular television show. Not all of them are great, but they're usually interesting to look at. The best of all the mods - for our money at least - is "New California." This is more than just a mod - it's a whole new campaign bolted on to the end of the existing campaign mode as a way of prolonging it.
Everything is new in this mod. You have new enemies to fight, new maps to explore, and new missions assigned to you. Most excitingly of all for hardcore Fallout players, you also gain the ability to play as The Courier in a whole new timeframe twenty years after the end of the original game. The depth of the mod is outstanding, and it’s still being worked on today. The community gets a little smaller as the game gets older, but there’s no reason to believe further features won’t still be getting added three years from now.
We've chosen popular games because you're more likely to have them in your collection at home, and so you're more likely to be able to enjoy these mods. The best thing is that they're free, so as long as you're comfortable with downloading and installing them, you've got nothing to lose by trying them. Give them a shot!
