Top 5 MMO Games In 2020
Even your favorite games can get dull after a while. You might be a highly active participant in part of a happy, friendly gang or squad, but there occasionally comes the point for most of us when we feel like we've seen or done everything there is to do in a game for now, and we have to put it down for a while and come back to it a few weeks or months later when everything begins to feel new and exciting again.
During those months away, you might be inclined to go looking for a new game to fill your time with - but how should you choose? There are just so many games out there! Visit any MMO game directory website, and you'll find that it's almost like an online slots website. In exactly the same way that the best online slots websites have multiple different options for genre and style, these MMO portals offer multiple different takes on the same theme - but not all of them are as good as each other. Some mobile slots are more likely to pay out than others, and some MMO games are more likely to be to your tastes than others, too.
We don’t know your individual tastes as a gamer, but we thought you might like to know what your fellow MMO and guild enthusiasts are playing and enjoying right now, as we step into a new decade. It may surprise you to hear that some of your old favorites are still full of life. Read on, and find out more!
Star Trek Online
Despite being ten years old, Star Trek Online is an MMO game that somehow continues to go from strength to strength. It's now available on consoles as well as PCs and Macs, and perhaps more importantly, it's free to play. It doesn't even make certain achievements impossible without spending money - you can play Star Trek Online to your heart's content without ever spending a single dollar on it, and you'll still have as good a time as anyone who's spent big money on their dream starship.
Not only is Star Trek Online still a going concern, but you could also make a strong case for saying its currently better than ever. With the recent (and very highly regarded) launch of the ‘Picard’ television show, you can bet that the game’s developers will take from the show to add new content to the game just as they did when ‘Discovery’ launched a couple of years ago. This game is forever expanding and changing, never runs out of missions, and has plenty of fleets who would love to have you as a member.
Guild Wars 2
At the risk of stating the obvious, Guild Wars 2 is a truly excellent game. We suspect that most of you are playing this game already, but you never know - some of you might be reading about it for the first time right now! Despite being eight years old, this game still feels ahead of the curve in a whole range of ways when it comes to the standard format of an MMORPG.
You can almost forget about a linear story mode - the focus of gameplay in Guild Wars 2 is to buddy up with new friends and get involved in the regular events. Every action you take matters, and so do wins and losses. You never feel pushed in any direction when you're playing Guild Wars 2 - it feels huge and organic, and the core game is free to play, so there's nothing to be lost by trying it out and finding out if you like it.
Blade & Soul
Another release from 2012, Blade & Soul holds the distinction of being (probably) the most famous and most-played Korean fantasy martial arts game of all time. That’s a very niche accolade - but then playing MMORPG games is a very niche activity! If you’re surprised that it’s so old, that may be because you’ve only come into contact with it comparatively recently - the Koreans didn’t let Westerners in on the fun until 2016.
We won't pretend that Blade & Soul doesn't have limitations - at the time of writing, there's no new content being developed for it. That doesn't take away from the fun of what's there, and having a guild or a group to team up with to fight your way through the dungeons is always a great time even if it's a dungeon you've seen countless times before. The level of strategy and speed involved in the combat system should present a challenge even to the savviest and experienced MMORPG player.
Runescape
If you played Runescape when it was brand new and then drifted off into different spheres of gaming, it might surprise you to hear that it’s still going - and it’s still receiving new content. In fact, it tends to get updates virtually every week. That means experienced players never get bored, and new players are met with a world that it will take them the best part of a virtual lifetime to explore.
Runescape is now so enormous that it can be a little daunting to try to get involved with it, but fortunately, the game's community of players are among the most friendly you could ever hope to come across. They're mindful and protective of new players, and assistance is never more than a question way. From your first mystical quest as a wide-eyed newcomer to your hundredth as a battle-weary veteran, there's always something fresh to aim for in Runescape.
Black Desert Online
We can sense some of you flexing your fingers to type complaints even as we start writing this, but bear with us for a moment. We know that Black Desert Online is technically ‘pay to play,’ and we also accept that ‘pay to play’ is against the ethos of what many of you believe MMORPG games are all about. We wouldn’t include a game that operates under such conditions unless it was spectacularly good - and even those most reluctant to pay for it would have to admit that Black Desert Online is incredible.
The entry-level price is somewhere between five and ten dollars, depending on where you get it from. For that money, you get next-level graphics (especially compared with some of the older games on our list), a genuine sandbox would you can do as you please with, and fantastic character customization options. Recruit an army of investment-banker slaves if you wish. Kill fellow players with impunity. Take up fishing during the day and go monster-hunting at night. The choice really is yours.
With a nod and a wink to perennial favorites World of Warcraft and Eve Online, that’s our take on what’s great to play right here and now in 2020. If you agree or disagree, you know where to leave your feedback - directly below this article, in the comments!
