We can give it a go :p Is your website going to be related to a specific game, or just general?
I would recommend having some idea of what sort of "look" you're going for. Are you wanting lots of information right on the front page, what sort of colour schemes are you thinking of (light, dark, etc), are you wanting a background image of some sort, or a pattern, or just a colour?
What sort of layout do you want .. generally you'll have a choice of one, two or three column layouts with, on the two and three column layouts, one being a "main" column and the other(s) being smaller (like this site where the "last forum posts" column is narrower.
It's worth having a browse through other sites to get an idea of what is possible and what you like and dislike. You can click on the names of people who have had input on the forums to get to their profiles, and then look at the sites they've created, or you can look at the "Recruiting" page and browse through those.
Have a look at my main site if you like, to get some idea of what I can do (I have no CSS knowledge so it's basically been a matter of trial and error and the occasional bit of research that has gotten me that far - but most of it is easily done simply using the standard site edit interface.
I've also got http://www.lightwolves.eu/ which, as you can probably tell, isn't used much - but it's a good showcase of the basics available, and is almost the opposite of our main site.
I also use http://hellscream-eu.guildlaunch.com/ mainly as a test bed - if someone needs help with something and I feel I need to trial it, I tend to do it there, rather than my main sites. Just in case something goes wrong :p
