Wiki Usage FAQ
Basic Usage
To use the Wiki there are only two things you really need to know:
1. The WYSIWYG Editor is your friend!
You can use the WYSIWYG to build pages with any regular HTML and embeddable content such as video and images without knowing any HTML. The toolbars on the WYSIWYG will help you do this. If you need to edit the HTML directly then click the "HTML" button on the toolbar and you can edit directly.
2. You can create new pages in the Wiki and link to existing pages "on-the-fly"!
One of the greatest features of a Wiki is the ability to create new pages on the fly and to link to existing Wiki pages without knowing the exact URL. You do this by typing the page name or title and then surrounding it with brackets. Like this: [[My Page Name]]. If a page named "My Page Name" exists then the Wiki will link to it. If it doesn't exist then it will give you a link that you can click to edit the page and create it.
General Conventions
* A regular link within the wiki will show up like any other link does on your site
* A bright red link is a Wiki link to a page that is ready to be created, but doesn't exist yet. If you want to create the content, click it and add the content to the page.
* Regular HTML links can be used to link to outside content
* If you would like to color a link then apply your formatting to the text with the link brackets [[Text]]. If you color the link the underline color will stay the template underline color and the underline will become red for non-existent Wiki pages.
* The following characters will be removed from page names '%',']','[',';',':' and '|'. These characters are reserved for special uses. Ampersands will be modified and spaces will be turned into underscores.
* The starting page or home page of the Wiki is named "default".

ok Now I want to cry. How do I "change" the name of a page linked like this.
I did this:
[[Firey Avenger]] saved it clicked the link to open it.
I then spent the next 6 hours typing info for the "firey defender"
Thats DEFENDER not AVENGER
/cry
The avenger is a quest but a WHOLE different one. Please help me I am freaking out.

Unfortunately, you can't change the name yet. But, no need to freak out, all is not lost by any means. What you can do is click the "HTML" button and select all that text you entered. Then copy all of the text from there. Open a text file on your desktop paste it into there. Then create the Fiery Defener link somewhere, click it to edit, then do the reverse. Copy the text out of your text file, click the HTML button on the correctly named page, then paste it an hit update.
Now, you're done and the defender info you entered is on the page with the defender name you can go back and enter the Avenger info on the Avenger page.

no, but it's on the to-do list.
Definitely something that needs to be added.

so.. is there a wiki page graveyard, per say? of all the mis-pages we have created?.. or a list we can pull up of the wiki pages associated with our site, so we can clean it out?
no, but it's on the to-do list.

I just spent about an hour typing out an entire page for my guild's website. When I clicked the save page button, I was taken to the page I was editing but it was totally blank! x.x
This is the third time it has happened.
When our guid leader has gone to edit or add to the pages, they always seem to work for him.
Am I doing something wrong or am I just cursed?

Sounds like you are cursed, or your router/internet connection isn't letting you send all the data at once, but there are ways to deal with this.
I would type out very long pages in a notepade document on your computer, so you will never lose any of that work. This is just good practice when working with internet documents.
I would also submit the page in smaller chunks, that way you can get a feel for what sort of page size your computer/internet connection is letting you send without any issues.
I routinely save nearly 1 meg wiki pages when testing in my test sites, so the page size is pretty wide open, but there are also some limitations from your end of the connection. If you can figure out what that size limit
is, I might be able to get a feeel for a way to help you improve it.

Is there a set of instructions for writing wiki pages?
I'm specifically curious about the following:
- Are there variables which can be used, like a dynamic reference to a username? Or dynamic reference to a list of characters claimed by the user's account? These would help us personalize some of the pages for the masses.
- Can we use templates?
At work I maintain a MediaWiki site which we use for standard operating procedures and other information, so I'm pretty familiar with it's capabilities and markup language. I'm not suggesting that you change your wiki system. Instead I'm curious if there is a place which has more detailed instructions so I can better utilitze the system you've made available.

There is a video in the video forums showing the basic syntax. Our Wiki implementation at this item is not nearly as complex or feature filled as MediaWiki. We chose to write our own than to do with integrating an available Wiki. So, only the most basic Wiki syntax is available. Mostly, on the fly creation. But the Wiki uses a WYSIWYG instead of Wiki syntax for bold and lists, etc. so you get alot of the same functionality without the extra syntax.

I'll look into this and try and get it fixed for the next release. One of the special characters in the link is throwing it off for some reason.

Ok so, I made a new wiki page, but the link to it is still red. Yes there is information on the page so it does exist. The other pages I hve done have white links to them. Its annoying my OCD :p Thanks.
